Why Is My Website Not Showing Up on Google? 8 Reasons and Fixes

You search for your own business - maybe even your exact business name plus your city - and your website is nowhere. Competitors you know you're better than sit right at the top. If your website is not showing up on Google, there's always a reason, and it's almost always one of the eight below.

First, one important distinction. "Not showing up" means one of two different problems: either Google doesn't have your site at all (an indexing problem), or Google has it but ranks it too low to matter (a ranking problem). The 30-second check:

Check it now: search Google for site:yourwebsite.com (no spaces). Pages appear? You're indexed - skip to reason 4. Nothing appears? Google doesn't have your site - start at reason 1.

If Google doesn't have your site at all

1. Your site is telling Google to stay away

This is the most common - and most embarrassing - cause we find. A single leftover setting from when the site was built ("discourage search engines from indexing", a noindex tag, or a robots.txt that blocks everything) silently makes your entire site invisible. It never expires and never warns you.

How to check: our free audit flags this instantly, or view your homepage source and search for "noindex". The fix is deleting one line - the damage is that it may have been there for years.

2. Google was never told your site exists

Google discovers sites by following links. A new small-business site that nothing links to yet can wait months to be found on its own. Registering the site in Google Search Console (free) and submitting a sitemap turns months into days.

How to check: search site:yourwebsite.com - if you get nothing and the site is newer, this is likely. The fix takes about 20 minutes.

3. Your site was rebuilt and the old pages vanished

After a redesign, page addresses often change. If the old URLs weren't redirected to the new ones, Google's copies of your pages now lead to errors, and it starts dropping them. Rankings you'd earned over years evaporate.

How to check: search Google for your business name, click your own old links, and see if they land on error pages. The fix is a redirect map - tedious but mechanical.

If you're indexed but buried

4. Your pages don't say what you do or where

Google can only rank you for words that actually appear on your site. A homepage that says "Welcome to our website" with a photo slider tells Google nothing. If you're a plumber in Rock Hill, the words "plumber" and "Rock Hill" need to exist in your page title, headings, and text - most small-business sites we audit are missing them in all three places.

This is the single highest-leverage SEO fix for local businesses, and it's pure wording - no rebuild needed.

5. Your site is too slow

Page experience, including loading speed, is a confirmed Google ranking signal. A slow site gets pushed down even when the content is right - and the visitors who do arrive leave before it loads, which teaches Google to send fewer. We wrote a full breakdown of the causes: Why Is My Website So Slow? 7 Causes and What They Cost You.

How to check: the free audit below measures your speed with Google's own tool and pinpoints exactly what's slowing you down.

6. Your site doesn't work well on phones

Google ranks the mobile version of your site, period. If text is tiny, buttons overlap, or the layout requires pinch-zooming, you're competing with a handicap - and since most local searches happen on phones, the visitors you do get bounce.

How to check: open your site on your own phone and try to tap the contact button. Honestly.

7. No Google Business Profile backing you up

For "near me" and "service + city" searches, the map pack sits above everything else. A complete, verified Google Business Profile - with your website linked, real photos, and reviews - is free and feeds your site's local credibility. Without it you're invisible in the map results no matter how good the website is.

How to check: search your business name on Google Maps. Claiming and completing the profile costs nothing but an afternoon.

8. Nothing links to you

Links from other sites are how Google measures trust. A site with zero links from anywhere - no chamber of commerce listing, no supplier page, no local news mention, no directories - looks brand new forever. You don't need hundreds; for local search, a handful of legitimate local links moves the needle.

Start free: your chamber, trade associations, suppliers who list dealers, and local directories. Avoid anyone selling "1,000 backlinks" - that's how sites get penalized.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if my website is on Google?

Search for site:yourwebsite.com (no spaces). Pages appear? You're indexed and the problem is ranking. Nothing? Google doesn't have your site - usually a technical block or a very new site.

How long does it take a new website to show up on Google?

Days to a few weeks if it's submitted through Google Search Console with a sitemap. Without that, months - Google has to stumble onto your site through links.

Do I have to pay Google to show up in search results?

No. Regular results are free and earned. Ads can put you above them while you pay, but the traffic stops the moment the budget does. Fixing the underlying issues earns the free spot.

Why does my competitor show up but not me?

Usually some mix of: faster site, pages that name the service and city, a complete Google Business Profile, and a few real links. Every one is checkable - the audit below shows which apply to you.
